Pavarotti in Montreal, simply the best Christmas Concert Ever
In 1978, Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian Tenor, gave what should be regarded as the best Christmas concert ever. It is concert of mostly spiritual music of the season. The setting is as equally grand as the concert itself. Montreal’s Basillique du Notre Dame, the mother church of les Habitants of Montreal.
The concert opens with a long form instrumental overture, and when Pavarotti opens his mouth, pure joy exudes. His Ave Maria, by Shubert, is one of the best you will ever hear. And his version, at this concert, of the Cantique de Noel, which English audiences know as O Holy Night, is the gold standard. The French lyrics, capture the spiritual nature of the holiday better than the English version.
The piece de resistance of the entire performance comes at about the 32 minute mark in the video. Pavarotti’s Gesu Bambino, accompanied by Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal is heavenly, and mesmerizing. His call and response, with a young boy, during the number, is goose-bump inducing.
This holiday season, take a moment to listen to this masterpiece. You won’t be dissapointed.
